Our democracy
is in crisis.
The United States is facing a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism that has unraveled other democracies, including efforts to undermine checks and balances, capture or intimidate the courts, silence the press, bully businesses and consolidate power. Judges are being threatened with impeachment and violence simply for doing their jobs. These attacks on our rights and freedoms must be met with equal resolve—by mobilizing attorneys as respected, nonpartisan advocates to defend equal treatment under the law, and to educate and catalyze a growing number of Americans to do the same.

Who we are
Mission
The Task Force for American Democracy was created to help halt our nation’s dangerous slide toward authoritarianism. We work to activate America’s lawyers and bar associations to fulfill their oath to uphold the Constitution and defend the rule of law, freedom of the press, and democratic norms—in the courtroom and in their communities—so that everyone plays by the same rules.
Vision
-
A healthy and resilient democracy where everyone plays by the same rules.
-
A healthy and resilient democracy based on the rule of law.
-
A healthy democracy where attorneys and citizens defend the power of our legal system to protect our rights and provide equal treatment under the law.
Focus areas
With professional staff and dedicated volunteers, the Task Force is building a national, nonpartisan network of lawyers and bar associations and then training, equipping, and supporting them to step off the sidelines and into action. Our focus:
-
Galvanize volunteer attorneys as defenders of democracy
-
Equip lawyers as educators and rule of law advocates
-
Ensure freedom of the press and uphold the First Amendment
-
Engage attorneys and bar associations as community bridge builders
Get involved
The Task Force will engage legal, business and community leaders across the U.S. to build a network of dedicated individuals to support and defend American democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law.
