Reaffirming The Lawyers’ Oath: More Important Now Than Ever

As May 1st approaches, we get ready to observe Law Day, a time to reflect on the vital role law plays in our society.
This year, however, Law Day carries a particular weight, an urgency that demands our immediate attention and recommitment to the foundations of our practice: the rule of law and the Constitution.
A powerful and immediate action we can take this Law Day is reaffirming our lawyer’s oath (#ReaffirmTheOath) of office.
It’s no secret that America’s legal system today is enduring extraordinary and uniquely formidable challenges coming from multiple directions. We are witnessing attacks on judicial independence, threats against judges, intimidation of law firms, the firing of government prosecutors for taking on particular cases and clients, and a dangerous propensity to view legal decisions through the lens of partisan divides.
Even worse, the foundations that uphold our legal system are being undermined and weakened in broad daylight, abetted by a blatant and deliberate disregard for legal norms. When this happens, the foundations of justice themselves begin to crumble.
It is in these moments that our commitment as legal professionals to the rule of law becomes ever more critical. Reaffirming our oath as lawyers is not a mere formality. It is a powerful yet solemn promise, a binding commitment to support, protect, and defend the Constitution and the laws of our nation.
Law Day in 2025 is an opportunity to stand up courageously for these ideals and do so steadfastly in the face of unprecedented storms. The fact is, we are the final bulwark of a legal system that has stood for 250 years.
If not us answering the call, then who?
When thousands of lawyers reaffirm their oaths on May 1, it will send a compelling message that the rule of law is not an abstract concept but instead is a living principle that we in the legal community are wholly dedicated to upholding and defending.
In our hearts, we know we cannot be silent. Indeed, silence itself speaks volumes.
Defend the judiciary and the rule of law. Reaffirm your oath. Ask your colleagues to do the same.
