About the event
When Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago, the American experiment was unique and improbable. Through the Declaration, the American colonies defied Britain, then the most powerful nation on earth. Jefferson recognized the significance and remarked: "The flames kindled on the 4th of July, 1776, have spread across too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume the engines and all who work them." The self-evident truth that "all men are created equal; endowed by their creator with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" remains the foundation of American democracy. As we have seen, our democracy is not self-sustaining; it needs constant tending. Join our panelists as they celebrate this important anniversary, discuss the vision of the Founders, and their hope for the future, despite the challenges ahead.
