Marty Smith

Marty Smith is a former partner at Preston Gates & Ellis (now K&L Gates). At the Preston firm, Marty founded the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group where his practice emphasized information technology, software and computer law, and international commercial transactions. His clients included Microsoft (for 25 years), Amazon, Valve, Corbis, the Business Software Alliance Aldus and a host of other technology companies. Marty was also a legal technology entrepreneur and was a co-founder of Attenex (the first software-based e-discovery company) and MetaJure (a law firm document management system).

Active in the community, Marty was a long-time board member and former Chair of the Technology Alliance (a not-for-profit organization of CEOs and other leaders from Washington state’s technology-based businesses and research institutions). He also served as Chair of Washington Governor Gary Locke's Digital Education Task Force, Chair of the Washington Digital Learning Commons, Vice Chair of the ABA’s Center for Innovation, as a Special Advisor to the ABA Commission on the Future of Legal Services and as the Reporter for the ABA Task Force for American Democracy. Marty is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Whitman College and the University of Washington Law School.
